Temp

What fish are you interested in? Why not run a heater?

For most fish in the hobby (Caribbean or tropical pacific), that's the very bottom end of the normal range.

There are a ton of interesting fish which do come from cooler waters, but won't be readily available.

Where do you live and what kind of system are you running? Also, how do you measure your temperature? I'm happy if I can keep my temps around 78. All of the extras I have in my system add heat, I'm just not ready to make the jump to a chiller. A heater definitely can't hurt if your temps are really that low.

Most of us keep our tanks at 74 or higher. I know a few very successful reefers who allow their tanks to drop to 73 during the winter, but I would say the majority of us keep their tanks at 75 or even 78 as the low temperature.

I have a heater and a thermometer however the heater has reviews that say the dial is very inaccurate and so is the thermometer. I plan to get a better thermometer next week and a better heater next year.

I have gone thru 3 brands of heaters. Most let the temp swing 4 degrees in both directions. Which is far too much for me.

I found the cobalt neo-therm heater, and it holds 78 degrees exactly all day and night. These things are wicked accurate. Amazon has them for around $ 40

I have an aqueon heater. Thing keeps my tank between 79.5 and 80.0 all day. Everyday. No problems. Clearly the knob isn't accurate. That's why I have a controller. Once it was dialed in it was great. $15.

Eheim Jagers are also good heaters. Sometimes the temp calibration is a little off from the factory (easy to fix), but very reliable.

I run my tank at 78. 72 is the lowest LA recommends so I don't think you want to be right at the lower limit in case the heater dies on you.

I'm not meaning to be rude, but a heater is generally one of the more inexpensive parts of the hobby. Why wait until next year for a new heater? A finnex titaniun can be had for around $40 on amazon.

I had a 50w heater in my 10 gallon with a dial, it was a viaaqua or aquaviva or something. I put the dial at 82 farenheit and it keeps my tank at 79 degrees. Just adjust ur dial up till u get ur temp. Of course monitor it at first. Dont wnna boil ur fish.
