Temperature for fish and reef tank.

Hello,

I have read that a reef tank should be kept between 78 and 84, with a fish only tank a little lower. I keep both in my tank, and it hovers closer to the 84 than the 78. Is this too warm? Thanks in advance!

84 is a little high. My 36g reef stay between 80 and 82.5. My 180g reef goes between 79 and 82 degrees. Both have corals and are doing fine.

I'd try to get it down at least to 82 if you can. A small fan blowing across the top of the tank should do it. Radio shack has some decent cheap, 3 or 4 inch fans. Only like $25 and pretty quiet. You might wanna try one of those.

IMO it's more about consistency. Although it also depends on where your corals / fish are native. Lots of our stuff comes from the indo-pacific which tends to have an underwater temp of 77 - 84. If you're at 77 in the morning when your lights turn on and 84 at night when they turn off. I'd buy a heater to keep it closer to the higher temp over blowing the money on a chiller or maybe a fan to stop your lights from heating up the water so much. Hope that helps :)
