Thalassia Seed Pods

I just received an e-mail from Florida asking if I wanted some fresh Thalassia testudinum seed pods (i.e. 2 pods... one has opened and released the seeds; other is still closed).

Any advice on germinating these when they arrive would appreciated!:D

Lucky lucky you! Mine are still growing well, beware of shocking them with salinity. I just set them overtop of substrate and allowed them to dig themselves in with the roots. A few of mine decided to fungus over with a white fuzz and I pulled them as that happened.

Typical light levels and nutrient levels are doing well for these guys so far. :)

Best of luck with them John!

I think I read somewhere that the plants which grow from actual seeds in the tank are hardier. Is this true? Sarah and Jman would it be possible to post some pics of the seeds then some sort of timelapse of the growth? :)

Also has Thallasia ever produced seed in aquaria, if so what conditions might need to be met in order for this to happen. Is it just a matter of getting enough light and nutrients, or is temperature, and perhaps even day/night cycle involved?

Jman where did you get the seeds, where would someone obtain them?

My camera is not working, but I should be able to borrow one to take some pics.
The pods were sent to me from someone that lives in the West Palm Beach area in Florida. He says they occasionally wash up onshore after a storm, but he has only found seed pods twice in the last few years.
The only place I know of that sells Thallasia (T. hemprichii)seeds is Sea Dwelling Creatures(Wholesale only). Your LFS may be able to order some for you.

I think this is probably the most miserable picture I've ever taken.. but its all I have currently. Havent had a chance to really work on a progressive series for growth.. though I really should now that you've mentioned it.

I received the Thalassia testudinum seedpod yesterday. I was sent the open pod containing 5 seeds.
I am using an old webcam that I hooked up to take some pics, so excuse the poor quality of the photos.

They are kinda cute. Unfortunately no, they're nowhere near full grown.. they've added about 4" of leaf length and have started to lay in some good roots. I'm stil hoping that I've got enough of what they need (light, nutrients, etc) for them to thrive.
