hello all,

seems that even our states best fish shop now cant avoid this parasite! i noticed many of their display fish scratching themselves so i only bought from the quarenteen tanks but it seems i havent managed to avoid anything.

got 3 new fish and now have 3 scratching fish, all eating like pigs which is good but ive got a plan cos i need to establish my tank.

so i plan to buy another load of fish this weekend to hopefully fill out my wish list then bring the entire display system (currently only has the LR from the cycle) down to hypo-salinity levels and treat like this for siad time. i think this seems to be a good solution as by the time hypo is up i can raise salinity and away we go with corals... and with no ich hopefully!!!

however my concern is over buying fish with ich and even buying fish without it and forcing them to get it, am i asking for trouble with stressing these fish as they may not be in the best of health to be aclimateising to my tank.

thanks adam.

sorry forgot something, if my fish have just begun scratching do you think i could make 9 more days without effecting the fish? or is it crucial to act as fast as possible.

I think this could potentially work if done carefully, but pods or any inverts that you don't see will be dead in your LR, you will have to monitor your amonia levels and ph levels and get ready to do lots of water changes until the system stabilizes at low salinity 1.009. Regarding the fish I don't think they will be too streesed about bringing the salinity down. I QT all my new fish and put them thru hypo. I have not lost one yet. The only concern I think will be the amonia levels if you bring the salinity down too fast. In QT I don't have a problem bringing down the salinity in 2 days. But you might one to do it over a period of a week with all the LR and LS, given time your bacteria to adjust. Good luck.

yeh good point on the live sand , my rock is officially so void of life after its cycle as i ran the temps way up to speed up the bacteria, then had my heater fail so temps dropped right down quickly. i dont mind though i only have a couple of pieces so as soon as hypo is over i can buy new rock... (i am temporarliy running my cannister on my sump to get me to the point where i can buy more rock and keep it alive)

thanks for the advice salinity will come down over 1 week. cheers

IMO I wouldnt hypo salinty a tank with live rock in it. the low sality will cause a die off on the rock and raise ammonia levels. Its best to perform hypo in a seperate tank with little or no substrate or live rock. If the hypo doesnt work for some reason you wont be able to run copper in a tank with substrate or live rock.
