The Anatomy of Hood Doors

The incredibly talented Williams Family is at it again... This time Father Williams lends his expertise to the now world famous construction of THE canopy for my 92g tank. Please view the original thread for the step-by-step picography and all due credits.

In order for the doors to match the curvature of the hood exactly, it was deemed necessary to actually form the doors directly on the hood! Two pieces of birch veneer plywood, were scored on the side to make them extremely pliable and were glued together and held in place by veneer(?) tacks, tape, a strap, and good old fashoned gorilla glue!

The doors are now back at the William Shoppe for final preparation.

We're mere days away now from the installation!!

Beware Lonnie -

As a wise man once said :

"If you aint never been to the ghetto - dont ever come to the ghetto."

Wouldn't want your tank to wind up.... like mine.

My dad did a great job on my hood also--it is neat because it hinges about 1/3 of the way back, giving lots of access into the tank, and it's also slotted to allow heat dissipation without light dispersion. And no masking tape!

Well, I finally got around to taking pictures of the doors... they haven't been stained yet, and I haven't put some weather stripping on the insides to contain the light leakage, but I love 'em:

The door-maker continues to make "threats" that he's not happy with the final product and wants to do them again.

Watch out Lonnie--I warned you my dad is a perfectionist (he shakes his head in shame at Doug's duct-tape masterpieces). He was talking last night about a third design idea he had in mind--better call him off before he goes back to Chez Williams and starts in on another set :).

Back about 1980 or so, I was on the crew that established the ABDR (Aircraft Battle Damage Repair) program for A-10 aircraft, at RAF Bentwaters in the UK. One of the best tools we had at the time was duct tape: it can be invaluable in certain applications (e.g., patching bullet/shrapnel holes on non-critical, non-flight surfaces; today, I use it to hold the feedline in place from my RO/DI unit to a Brute can, amongst other things). In the case of reef tanks, when to use it really depends on the application you need it for; even if that amounts to differentiation between a nice piece of cabinet work and perhaps being a bit anal.

I think your dad did a great job and he should be commended for it! And I also think Doug is making do with what he has and given his upcoming move, rightly so ;)

It's all the right tool for the job. Not everything I build is ghetto... if you looked at my house pics a few posts back - you can contrast my tank light rig to most of the other house work I did - like my fireplace :) - much different approach. Although I do admit to being something of a perfectionist- I conciously stop myself because there is a downside that nothing ever gets done if you are.

PS - speaking of the A10- I co-designed the targetting computer for that which compensates for the torque of the plane after firing the gun. For those that dont know the A10- it's a 30mm (??) cannon with wings - that fires a few hundred rounds a sec (???) - so when you fire the whole plane tilts up from all the gun force...
So now, as you fire, this computer automatically compensates (ie flies) and adjusts all the flaps and surfaces so it still goes in the previous direction. -- I did not use any duct tape in that design.

the warthog... a killing machine! definately don't want to be on the receiving end of that cannon.

Still love the doors! I shake my head looking at what I made... so depressing.

I tried calling him off... might have actually worked too... unless he's doing a covert redesign. I haven't received a correspondence back since I fired my salvo (which was laced with kudos and third party testimonials).

I think I can get a message to him - you can have a spare set of doors if you like. Maybe youd like something with some sort of inlayed pattern? A mohagonny venerring in order. Maybe a recess with your initials on the door done in some extinct species of wood? What about a mag-lite holder on the back side of the doors? That would be good because if you were trying to hide your collection of rare mag-lites- robbers would never look behind your fish tank doors for them...

Kind of like a Noah's Ark sort of thing? ;)
