the heat

Having a basement sump, I thought I was immune from high temperature problems. But this summer I've been hitting 84 on a regular basis, and 87 on occasion. Since last summer I changed systems (120 to a 150) but the only real difference temp wise is the circulation. I exchanged 1 big Sequence 2100 (on return) and a half dozen submersed flow devices for 2 hammerheads, one on return and one on closed loop. Wouldn't you think that would have been cooler? Nope.

This week I replumbed the downstairs part of the closed loop and put the old sequence back in that task. So far my temps have been only getting up to 82 during the day, so that might have fixed the problem. I just hope the corals can recover.

Unfortunately, my corals have taken a beating. Most of my big encrusting montis colonies (and they had gotten really big) don't look like they are going to survive, and the big ORA tort (8 inch wide colony) isn't looking too good either. Pink stylos kaput.

Softies, millies, and stags all fine.

Sorry to hear of your trouble Dan. I hope the changes you made continue to help and your corals recover.

get some 2 litre bottles and freeze RODI water in them. They work awesome as floats.

If that doesn't cut it, you MAY need to invest in a 1/2 HP chiller.

Well, it depends on various factors like how much dissolved oxygen is available and how much flow there is. Also the surface of corals directly under the halides can have higher temps than the water, as you've experienced if you've ever snorkled on a day when the sun goes in and out from behind clouds.

So I guess it varies with each system. Mine seemed fine at 84, but ran into trouble above that.

Dave, I would do that but not sure how many bottles I'd have to float (daily!) to have an effect of 200 gallons of water...

Dan, you are running well water or city.

If you have well water, why not try running a cold water chiller that people use with home brew beer. get copper tubing from HD, and wrap it around something round and make a spiral out of it. Then hook up your cold water to run trough the copper tube. It will keep the copper cold, which will cool the sump water. People who make home made beer use this to drop the wart down before fermantation.

I dunno, sticking lots of copper tubing in the the salt water could be a bad idea!
But it should take care of any ich problems!:D

I have my own set of issues, but my tank has been running 81-84, topping out at 85 a couple times when I had the AC off. Havn't really noticed any problems that I can say for sure that are attributable to the rise in temp. Think my problems are associated with levels/swings in Ca, alk, and pH...maybe some PO4 as well. Swings in temp can't be good either. :(

FWIW, all my montis are still growing/encrusting quite well...its my acros that aren't happy...expecially my stags....base recession.

Go figure.

They also make a soft plastic tubing. If you go to HD ask for trailer pipe. It is used in repairs done on moblie homes.

Helps having a plumber as a best friend.

Well, I added some more small fans to my canopy, but more important dragged a couple window air-conditioners out of the basement, and closed off the room as much as possible. Temps stayed below 81 yesterday.

However, we had a huge storm and the power went out for 5 hours!

LOL I was at work... it was 120 today next to the broiler.

I sweat so much I actualy STOPPED swetting, and had crystalized salt on my face.

so shut up about 81 degrees ! :p

EDIT: ps; I must taste good, caus my cat was all about licking my face when I came home LOL.

I was on the room of Crossgates most of the day my digital thermometer maxs out at 140 which was around 11 am .........Ill take 81 any day

The a/c at work has been broken (which shuts off at 10pm anyway) but there was no circulation and the air on the dock side of the store was so bad you could see mist. When coporate came to fix it (we've been waiting 3 mos) it was at 109 and going up.
