please indicate approximately when you got the tang, how big it was, and how big it is now.

i'd just like to see the growth rate of some of the tangs. also interested in seeing how big some tangs get as it seems like some of them do hit a brick wall in the home aquairum.

Both my tangs are 5 years in my care. My tomini has grown from a 1.5" paper thin baby to a beastly 6". My powder blue came in at just under 4", and is maybe, maybe, 5" now. I wish it would have grown at least a little more, but maybe the tank is too small? Possibly. It's a 4' 150g reef.

My Z. Flavescens (yellow tang) has been with me for 7 years. I'm sure he hit that brick wall. He started out just over 2 inches and now is about 4 1/2 to 5 inch.

My PBT is about 12-13 yo and all these years it only grew and inch or two and has had ich only once....

I had a regal tang that grew from 1.5 inch to 8 in about two years and 2 inch pacific sail fin that grew to 10 inches in the same about of time. This was in a 210 gallon reef. As my friends state I feed my fish very well. Both fish are no longer with me due to aggression. Both fish just turned one day and was going to kill other fish. It didn't happen at the same time about 6 months apart.

Interesting thread. I don't remember the exact specifics, but the stories here of the regal (hippo), yellow, an PB tangs are similar to mine.

I have a vlamingi which about doubled its size, about 1-1.5 inches to 4 inches, in 20 months. kept in a 110g for 1 year then a 92g for the rest. fed mysis (hikari and PE, mostly hikari), spectrum pellets, sushi nori, occasional flake, bloodworms, krill and sometimes spirulina enriched brine shrimp. its in a mixed reef tank, with a variety of other non aggressive fish.

Nice job on so many years! So how big do you think it is now?
thanks...about 5-6" It's one of my hardiest fish and because of it's "nice" tempermant I have to take it out every time I add a new fish, but never have a problem with re-aclimation or ich etc...

Lets see now for the rest of my tangs
Purple 1" 2005 4" today
Scopas got from someone else 5" 2008 6" today
Blue hepatus someone had it in a 90 for several years before I got it in 7" 2005 9" today
Mimic tang 4" 2008 4" today

Holy cow. My vlamingi has grown from 1-1.5 inches to 6+ inches in 8 months. I do feed a ton though.

I don't have year totals, but I've had a tomini, powder blue, and powder brown for about six months.

I had a 4" yellow tang for a year and it never grew.

The powder brown has gone from 3" to a solid 4" or 4.25" in a short amount of time. It was always thick.

The powder blue was large when I got it, and has grown from a skinny 5" fish to an obese 6" fish. It looks bigger every time I look at the tank. I'm starting to wonder if this powder blue is going to outgrow it's 6' tank.

Tomini has grown the most but it was the smallest, from 2.5" to 4".

All of these fish heavily consume a mixture of NLS and Formula 2 pellets four to six times per day. I'm sure that has something to do with the growth, especially the thickness of the Acanthurus.

My hippo "Tiny" has been in my tank for 2 years now.. Started off at about1" now 2 3/4 to 3" never had ich easy going temperament..

Yes, I have a clown tang. Beautiful fish but by far the most aggressive in the tank. Have had him probably 6 months. When I got him he was maybe 2.5 - 3" ... had him in quarantine about 5 weeks and he wouldn't eat much but he did ok. Put him in the DT and he fought with my Kole tang for a week or so then everyone settled down. He's now maybe 4.5-5" and is a real beauty. He grew a lot at first and is now fat and happy. Hasn't grown much more in the last 2 months. Still aggressive ... likes to ''exercise" the 2-bar rabbit which is the biggest in the tank, maybe 6".

I have a blue tang, he is about 4.5 inches now I think he was around 2.5 three years ago when I got him. I am actually really surprised at how slowly he has grown. I have him in a 125 so I don't think it's tank size that is slowing him down? I have a domino damsel and soldier fish who looked tiny next to him and now they have almost caught up!

Regal tang got him around 3 inches close to 6 now have him about 1 1/2 years
Orange shoulder tang 4 inches now close to 8 over 1 year
powder blue started 4 inches close to 6 .
Vlamingi got him from a friend was 8 inches had him close to a year about 11 inches now
2 Fowleri tangs 4 inch had them about 6 months no noticeable growth
