Thought I had my bases covered - CBB

Hello all,

There is something wrong with my CBB. I bought him over two weeks ago, and over that time have had him in QT and got him eating frozen. He was picky about food the last few days, and I noticed his back fin deteriorating. Today he did not eat even live brine (not even interested) and is staying at the top of the tank with his mouth at the surface. His back fin looks worse, and he looks very skinny (he looked fine a few days ago). He is still in QT; has been there since I got him. I did a water change today with lower salinity water to being his salinity down a bit (it was at 1.025).

What should I do? Is there some kind of medication I can buy to help the "fin rot"?

What are the params in the QT? I would suspect ammonia poisioning if the QT was not cycled before the fish went in just from what you have posted. I would keep the water params in perfect shape.

I keep a HOB filter on my reef and move it over to the QT - isntant cycle.

It's a moot point anyway - he died some time last night. Amazing it can happen so fast.

Sorry to hear. Does the HOB have a built in bio pad or just the filter pads? If the filter pads had not been on there long enouph, weeks and weeks, but by then they would be junked up. I would still suspect ammonia spike without a reading. CBB are one of my favorites.

Inside the filter I have a sponge to collect "gunk" then under that ceramic rings. The filter was on the reef for months, and I shook the rings in tank water every once in a while to make sure there was no biuld up on them that got past the sponge. I was obviously rinsing off the sponge regularly too.

I got this fish through a LFS dor $25, which makes me think it is from the Indo-Pacific. I have heard Australian fishes have a much better chance of survival - I think I will try again with a mail ordered one.

Thanks for the help.
