thought it was ich, maybe not?

ok, i got a royal gramma on sunday. 2 days later, there were white spots on either side of the back fin (i realize they are blurry, if someone wants to show me how to stop the darn autofocus not focusing i'd love it):

SO, i start hypo. i'm down to 1.011 (need to bring down some more) and today it looks like it may be something else? it's almost as if the two white spots exploded, and took off the scales and part of the fish'es back fin.

any clues? is it possibly just the ich exploding and doing damage?

The part where the spots exploded could be the release of the cysts starting the cycle of infection again. Continue with the hypo until cure is achieved. If the fish is still eating, soak food in garlic for 20 min. Do multible feedings through out the day.

thanks, this is my first experience with ich and hypo hasn't been the easiest thing to maintain--evaporation is killing me. thanks for the input :)

Try setting up a drip system to the tank to compensate for evaporation. Get a kalkwaser delivery container, it will allow you to set the proper drip rate for the R/O water drip. Basically an automatic top off for your QT. Good luck, and keep us updated on your progress.

P.S your welcome

gramma died yesterday. the whole fin was gone, as was more scales up near it's head. the bicolor blenny is doing fine though. i'm wondering if it was ich at all.

It may have been ich to begin with, but secondary bacterial infection must have set in. Antibiotics should have been used with the hypo treatment. We learn by doing. Sorry for your loss.

thank you-- what should i do about the blenny? every time i go to the tank he tiger stripes up so i cannot tell if he's got anything white on him. should i continue hypo or start bringing it up?

btw, this is what the gramma looked like when i pulled it out. not sure how long it was dead, i didn't want to bother it while it was hiding.
