I'd try 3 and see what happens. I'd go for all the same size. But I'm just going on instinct. I just have the one. I've read they can be kept in groups.
If going for more than a pair get a group of them all at once, the smallest size possible. If they are immature they can grow up and figure out their social behavior together.
If you are going for having only a pair, then get as big of a size difference as you can find. That way there will clearly be a dominant and subordinant fish, and this will likely prevent fighting between the 2.
