Time To Vent A Little Bit! (grab some coffee and warm blanket)

Well I have recently reached the point where it is time to serioursly start purchasing rare/unique corals, inverts, fish, etc. for my display tank. As many of you know I am always working and have come to a point in my life where I actually have funds set aside just for these purchases. In the past three weeks I have made my rounds to every LFS in town and one outside of the city limits, which I have done for years. On a few of those visits I have encountered the owners of the shop who obtained my curiosity and eager interest in their livestock. When I asked about the asking price the majority of the time the responses have been, "they are not for sale".

I have worked in the LFS and been a hobbyist close to 20 years and have come to the point where I am fed up with LFS. Back in the day and this is from the way I was brought up in this industry of trade, a shop had a display tank of items the owner had collected over the years from shipments and placed in a tank to show customers what was out there and what a well stocked reef tank could eventually look like. These items were clearly displayed along with either writting on the tank it self or a sign next to it stateing, "Livestock Not For Sale, Display Only". Times have change apparenlty.

First thing in my quest: the past few weeks I have encountered a couple of LFS which will bring an item to my attention, hook me in (to the point of reaching for my wallet) and then state, "it is NOT FOR SALE". If its not for sale and you cant get another order of them, then dont place them in a tank where they are the only item(s) NOT FOR SALE where everything else is. I am not talking about items that are currently sold or were ordered for another person either.

Second thing: the past few years I have encountered a few LFS which will special order items stateing either, "it might take time" or "Im placing an order tomorrow and will try to get one on that order". To many times I have been asked for my phone number and observed as the OWNER placed my name along with my contact number on a magical notebook or piece of paper next to the register which the OWNER stated Ill call you when it comes in. Thank god I have not held my breath or I would have died a long time ago. I understand that in this industry that it takes time and nothing happens over night. When you build a relationship with an owner or business and they keep filling you with horse crap and fake interest in obtaining items for you, a person gets tired of the same routine received from the same person over time. Let me state that though some items I have requested and willing to be patient and wait for were rare, but the majority were common things that I know are available with in any 6 month time frame on any distributors list.

Recently I had an OWNER order a fish for me, stated that the item is always available and I explained that I would be in the following week to pick up the order. I left my contact information with that person and they stated, "I will call you when it comes in". Well low and behold, I received no phone call. Not only did I not receive a phone call but the item did come in, but was seen by a close friend who knew it was ordered for me and was told by my friend that it had come in. It doesn't bother me in the least that no phone call was made to inform me of its arrival, hell I go to this shop once a week but when I go in and the item had been sold to someone else that bothers me. When I did ask if someone else had requested the fish and they walk up to the register and look in their magical order book with your name, phone number and item requested on it and they state, "no looks like only you did" for a calm person I almost blew a head gasket.

I am a patient person, and have become more so in the past 7 years performing the duties my job requires of me. I have come to a point in my life where I have come to the conclusion that Customer Service in the LFS industry is not even half of what it use to be. Current trends have shown themselves to be nothing more then people blowing smoke up your butt and making a instant sale and not maitaining loyality and constant sales with customers over time. For these reasons I have to put my foot down.

Many of you who have read this entire post are saying,"I understand, I relate" and others might be saying, "deal with it and stop whinning". Well after years of going through the BS, I have finally dealt with it and I moving on. So with this long winded post I have finally stopped biting my tongue and stated what has been on my mind for the past few years. This is just my expierences and frustrations.

I wish everyone in the hobby as much happiness and joy that I have received from my tanks and none of the hassle and BS I have received from LFS.

I have voiced this same thing (on a smaller scale) many times on this, and other reef forums. If I enter a RETAIL store, I expect every damn thing in the store to be for sale. I dont give a rats a$$ if its "sooper dooper rare one of a kind hella unique limited edition" whatever. Its in a store, its for sale. I assure you that if I went in to any of those stores, and said "i want that not-for-sale item right there", and I had $50,000 cash in my hand, they would sell it. So the damn thing IS for sale, everything has a price. If they dont really want to sell certain things, then like you said, they need to have those things in a "show tank" and have a sign on it saying so. But dammit... if i want something, give me a friggin price on it! I dont care if that chalice is the only one. If its that rare, and you dont want to lose the whole colony, then either take the damn thing home and put it in your personal tank, or put a ridiculous price tag like $10,000 on it, so people stop asking.

And why have a huge seahorse tank, if not only do you not want to sell them, but you dont want to order any more, ever?

and when I ask how much a fish is, I dont want to hear "oooooh, hes expensive. it took me forever to find him" and then just walk off. I want a damn price! I have a $300 fish in one of my tanks. I understand how expensive this hobby is.

I too have had the EXACT same experience with a couple of the LFS in town with the "can you get me this?" and they say they are placing an order at the end of the week... and it never comes. its very irritating. I even offer to pay in advance, and they either refuse, or say that they dont take money until it comes in, assuring me that they will order it.

I dont need to name any names, as there are only a half dozen places in town to even get saltwater stuff (couple more if you want to make a drive) but I do agree 100% that customer service at most of the LFS is lacking. I do get better service when I talk to the owners usually, but sometimes I just feel like people just dont care to sell anything. they just want to wait for you to pick something out.

I like all of the people at all of the LFS around here. I feel like we are lucky to have a good mixture of every type, all within a 15 minute drive of each other, but each of them have their own strengths and weaknesses.

I think that they all have the same weakness though, which is salesmanship.

I could go on all day too about the exact same subject, but i better cut myself off here. lol

this is really not the case here in south africa. seeing as the market is so small and the lfs are trying so hard to survive. if u place an order u will get a call when it arrives. also verything has a price even if its not for sale offer enough and its yours.

That happens to me all the time. I get my name added to the notepad and then I go to the store and see the item I ordered, this time it was a test kit, in the display for sale. Tell them u ordered that for me. And get the oh yea I knew I ordered it for someone. Or the oh I went to the supplier and they didn't have any I forgot to tell you.

Nobody wants to work for money anymore.

Man Ian... that's too bad... I feel your pain thought. We heard it all too often back when we had our shop. Even though I don't think we were always perfect we heard time and time again about this store did this or didn't do this. I can't remember what system we used to keep track of orders but I can't remeber fumbling too many up. Service is king in any retail industry.

New store

New store

Ok so I guy puts in a new store everything is for sale and they call you when its in and treat you like a real person you could have the tulsa business is that what i'm hearing? Because we have been thinking of this for a while I can bring deals at almost half of most of these guys. Just didn't know if there was a real market in the area for a real shop.

If this town can support 7+ stores, and they do it "so-so" then another store with better pricing, excellent service, salesmanship, and aggressive pricing should thrive.

HOWEVER... you can bring in stuff at "1/2 price as the other guys" for a little while, but unless you either have A) no overhead, or B) another source of income, and are just doing it as a hobby, not as an actual business... then you would be broke, and out of business in a year or so.

Also, even if there was a "superstore" here in Tulsa that had great pricing, and above average staff, then most people would still shop around at the other stores and still purchase elsewhere, just based on previous relationships, impulse purchases, and convenience to their home or work.

These threads are getting intresting ha. Everyone has their fav. store to shop at. Some stores could have dirty tanks and sketchy diy stuff but as long as they are two dollars cheaper thats all that matters. The post above mine hit on some very vaild facts about tulsa's market.

The Tulsa Market is not alone in this, Apparently the Virus "L.F.S.B.S." has hit the entire country. The one I keep hearing in my area is "When God makes it available I will bring it in, so check back often" BTW God does have everything available you just don't want to pay the extra shipping from a reputable (think spelling is wrong) vendor.

I think it just comes down to disciplined business principles that are followed with rigger and are based in a deep rooted sense of morals, character, service and honor. I think that some businesses just don't feel that bad or aren't too concerned if they break their word or don't look to meet the customers expectations.

That is really the beauty of competition. It brings the best out of people. either you figure out a way to make money by helping people and giving them what the expect and you do it with a smile or someone else will. That's it. period.

Personally, I try to look at my daily work like I'm still interviewing for the job and even when caring for the tank of a customer that I've worked with for 7 years I still want to show them that I'll bend over back wards for them and even if I'm busy I always have time to see to their needs promptly and with a great attitude.

Man, and then doing business is so much more rewarding financially and emotionally.

It can be a bit tough but it just takes doing the right thing, right now, all the time.

If your prepared to wait for it to ship from a online retailor why not give a lfs your buisness which will support your local economy versus who knows where. Of course that all depends on the deal the lfs is willing to make on a model your interested in, but just simply calling to see if they have one, then because they dont, you go online doesnt make sense. Most lfs can get a item into there doors within 3 to 5 days and if its a good store you get the added benefit of one on one support and knowledge backing the product. Im not saying everything anyone ever buys needs to come from a LFS but simply calling and checking stock on a single item like a UV sterilizer that there are many diffrent sizes and types for all sorts of diffrent applications is not giving them a fair chance to earn your business
