Not sure if this has been done before or not but thought I would start a thread where if you could give one piece of information/advice you have learned thru trial and error(most of mine), or over time being in the hobby that you think could help someone what would it be????

I'll start"¦.

You can cut corners on a lot of things to save money but always spend as much as you can on lighting, power heads and protein skimmers"¦ One more that I've mentioned before"¦ Research, Research, Research, ask your LFS, then Research some more before buying equipment. I know this would have saved me a lot of money and headaches.:headwally::headwally::headwally:

12 fish in a 58 equals lots of death and try to not take in much advice from the people at large chain retail stores.

I've learned that there is a lot of people with advice and opinions, sometimes good and sometimes bad. Think thorugh it, and take the time to research whatever advice that you lean towards, and try a small control excercise first. Never dry run any system modification or change.

Water Changes

Water Changes

My famous quote to anyone that asks me or is a newbee to the hobby about successfully keeping a reef tank. Quote: "Do your water changes regularly and you will do fine." Chemicals/equiptment/snake oil will never take the place of regular water changes in my small opinion.

James Carter

Thanks for the New Thread

Happy Reefing

Good stuff…

Add small easy fish first, then move towards your more difficult(tangs) or potential aggressive fish last ( I plan on adding 3 yellow and 2 purple tangs last). I know every fish is different, so far this has worked well for me. Also try to add fish from the same family at the same time. So far I’m 2 for 2 with the same time and 0 for 1 with adding at different times in my current setup…

Also agree with the water changes, but also can’t stress enough how important it is to have a protein skimmer equal to or greater than your fish load. Most people go by the water volume rating of the skimmer and don’t consider their fish load. I personally run two skimmers that equal 50% more than my total water volume. This can be a bad thing for your corals(color) when you have a low fish load but when you plan on having a crap load of fish its needed……

Be patient...nothing happens fast in this hobby. Even us who have been in it a while still try and rush things.

heres a good one....

if it aint broke, dont fix it (if your tank is looking good and corals growing, dont change anything and keep your hands out of the tank)

have always loved this one.

Here are a couple more:
The solution to pollution is dilution.

when in doubt, pull it out. though we have better access to identification databases these days.
