Blue Tang, Yellow Tang, Blue Angel, Longnose Butterfly. There are a lot of fish out there with really boring common names. So, do something about it!
Fishbase.org is currently running a contest for people to suggest Common Names for species in their database that do not have one yet.
Once 3 suggestions have been made for a particular species, a database editor will select the name that fits best. The person whose name is chosen will be listed as a 'contributor' on the data page related to that particular species. This isnt like some guy making a list of fish- fishbase.org is an excellent scientific resource that lists tens of thousands of species accompanied by an overview of whatever research has been done and whatever data is known about the animal.
Ive gone through a lot of fairy wrasses, so say you want to out compete my suggestions- go to fishbase.org and in the "Genus" search box, type in Cirrhilabrus to see a list of all species currently known in that group. On the chart there is a listing of Scientific Names, Valid Names, and Common Names. If the common name slot is blank, click on the species' profile and you will be given a link where you can suggest your own.
(Enter whatever Genus you want. Here is the list for Cirrhilabrus in particular though: Fairy Wrasses )
You spent a lot of time and money on this hobby- might as well get a little official recognition for it.. lol
(And no... I am in no way associated to fishbase.org I just think its a wonderful resource and use it several times a day)
