TLF underwater epoxy AKA plumbers putty?

homesick fisho

Bought some two little fishies underwater epoxy last week to fix some coral onto live rock. It cost over 50 RM in Malaysia or about 15 USD. it worked well but sure stank pretty badly. Anyhow I was in a local hardware store yesterday and stumbled on this stuff called plumbers putty which happened to be identical in size, colour (grey) and even packaging to the TLF epoxy. Its advertised cure time and preparation were also identical. The only difference was that it 10 RM or about 4 USD. It claims it's safe for potable water. Is this the same stuff? I would have bought some to compare except I can't stand the smell :eek2:

If it is truely safe for Potable water it should be good. Super glue Gel type works also very well.

Plumbers putty really isn't the same thing. There's a good chance it's reef safe (it's definitely safe for potable water systems), but it doesn't harden like an epoxy does. Your hardware store should have two-part epoxy putties, though. Aquamend and Loctite are popular brands in the US, but I'm not sure if they sell it over there. Now this might be what you're actually talking about (look for the word "epoxy"). Most any brand that's safe for use on potable water systems and doesn't contain any metal should be fine, though. It'll look just like the epoxy sticks you buy from a fish store, with one color around the outside (usually green or blue) and generally a white center.

For reference, this is what's commonly called "Plumber's Putty":

And this is two-part epoxy putty (sometimes called Plumber's Epoxy Putty):

This is the exact brand and product I found in my local hardware store. It looks identical to the TLF stuff. Not that I'm knocking TLF because they sell good stuff. I note they also sell epoxy in a red colour. Can you get plumbers epoxy in red?
