TM Original and "The Fuzz"

I was doimg some reading the other day and came across an article reviewing salt mixes. One of the comments the author made was that he experienced a brown algae bloom when using TM. Has any one else seen this? I ask because I have been using TM original in my new tank and have the exact issue right now. Granted the tank is only two months old and is likely still going through the new tank phases but it seems to be enough of a coincidence that I would toss the question out there. I am using live rock from an old tank and have not had any other algae issues. The stuff has covered most of the live rock but is not particularly offesive. It is pretty light in color and is only about 1/4" long but I want it gone. It clearly is photosynthetic as it has not grown on any of the rocks not under direct light.

Comments?

Thanks,

oh jeez. Gonna open up a can of worms. :)

There is LOTS of discussion about this in this thread and others.

Also, check this months reefkeeping magazine.

I will, thanks.

But cans of worms are fun right? I cant wait for the flames to start :-)

Seriously; I am having this issue and would like some feedback. I am not trying to start a "salt war".

Whats TM original? Search engine was down so I couldn't find out.

DOH! that pesky search function. Take it from me, man. it NEVER works.

2 months is way to early to be worry about fuzz!!! Most reef tanks do not really settle in until 6-8 months. I just switched my 150 to a 210 nd even did water exchanges by pumps for a week and I still experienced a batch of Dinoflagellates. It has taken 4 months for my tank to settle in, and I transferred everything across the room. Nothing new was added, so don't be alarmed, just do regular water changes, with RO water, a good salt mix, I prefer Instant Ocean Reef Crystals. Now wait, it will all come around. When you make a change in your tank, your tank will respond also, but it will take a while to see results, like 2 weeks. Corals and coralline does not grow overnight, only when the tank is established will you see good growth.

Only use Ro/Di. I have a SpectraPure 5 stage with auto top off. About 40x turnover. SPS frags are looking good. I have seen about a 1/2" of growth from the first frag I added in September. Also seeing coraline popping up on the tank back. I cant complain except for the fuzz. It looks like my rocks have a light brown wispy beard. Do I switch salt?

test your make up water....there is phosphates in TM....thats why i refuse to use it

there are more phosphates in TM than IO and the other commonly used salts...i would switch salts...but then you run into other issues...

its always something with every salt..you just have to pick the lesser evil with you...for me algae is evil and will die damnit...so i dont use TM

HW is a great salt prospectively there is a thread on it in the sps forumn that isnt very old...you will find more of my opinions in that thread
