I'm pondering the thought to build my own starphire tank after receiving a few quotes from some very reputable builders such as Miracles and Reef Savvy. Has anyone built their own larger sized glass tank? If so what were the most challenging aspects, and what mistakes or unforeseen items occurred? I feel I can save an at least 40%-50% in cost since the most expensive piece of any custom build is labor. Plus additional savings in shipping.
The only place that makes building a DIY cost inefficient is perhaps Glass Cages. The prices are the lowest of all the builders, and by some margin too, but I've read so many posts of people saying to stay away from them and others that are totally satisfied. My LFS owner, whom I totally value his judgement, recommends Glass Cages.
So besides my initial questions, what are some of your opinions? My build would be roughly 115G, 60x20x24, euro braced, additional bracing on the bottom to avoid trim and center acrylic overflow.
