I have had a 12g reef for 5 yrs and it is time. The new setup is a 30 with 15g sump but im stumped when i got to the Question To Drill or not to drill. are there advantages to either? if i drill where can i do it? which is safer? or do people do both for safety? as you can see i am lost here and could use some help this is my first sump and i understand mostly how it works but haven't set up in person yet. Also I am new to RC and just learned about FVRC. any help would be greatly appreciated thankx Podhead

I have had drilled and undrilled tanks. If you can have your 30 gallon drilled safely (depends on the glass) then I recommend you do so. My current tank is drilled and plumbed to the basement. I never have problems with losing my siphon and I can do all of my work standing up at my sump as opposed to trying to maneuver underneath my tank. Drill!

I have a 30 gal already drilled, and setup.... with stand... never seen water. NO serious offer will be refused. - I vote drill, but then again, everyone alreadyknew that.

I'm serious on my 30. I want it gone. I'll throw that and a 75 gallon tank, drilled and an overflow where you want it even up for a 120 rr. :D

Its an all-glass non-tempered glass tank. So it can be drilled, but who drills tanks in the area, any one know? and what size to drill, i'm looking for up to 300gph. thanks for your imput.

Some people find over the top overflows fine. In my opinion I would never go that way again maybe I had the wrong kind it did work ok most of the time but it always seemed to screw up at the worst times. The new driled tank I have now has been running about a year now and hasn't had one problem yet.

The best thing I ever did was buy a bit and drill out all my tanks. I have a 75 I'm about to drill, maybe tonight, if your interested, you can call me, and I'll give you directions, you can come watch, Maybe bring the tank and we'll take care of your problem. I have 2 different bits, Bulkheads are available around the corner at Fleet Farm.

Maybe we do this, you help me get my 75 up onto the stand for drilling, and I show you how it's done. If you feel confident, you do your own. :D

Oh, yeah... 1 800 929 9921 ask for Jason. Till 5pm.

Your certainly welcome. It was nice to talk your arm off. I punched those 4 additional holes into the 75 liast night before 9pm, rounding me off at 7 holes for the night!

I hope you found your bulkhead fittings ok. I forgot to tell you NOT to over tighten the nut, as the washers bulge and do not seal well. Only finger tight. Make sure to use/lube the seal up with vasaline well and clean up the excess when done. don't overtighten, incase you ever need to get it off again. and the printing on the nut on the outside faces you, not in towards the tank, it's a pain if you put it on wrong.
