to refugium or not, that is the question

I hardly see any arguments against having a refugium. The only people who do seem to be simply unsure of its benefits. I personally thing they help a lot. Particularly as a breeding ground for microfauna. Its fairly well documented that by running them on a reverse cycle they help keep ph up during the night. Plus, if you decide it's not doing much, or enough, you can just throw some new lights over it and turn it into a frag tank.

+1

I'm able to run my tank without a skimmer and nitrates are zero. I added my old skimmer about 3 months ago, it sucks, I'm debating turning it off again.

I also believe that the Caulerpa releases something in the water that helps fish with healing from injuries and from HLLE/Lateral Line Disease. I feed only flake food and nori, no supps or vitamins, and I've cured multiple tangs with HLLE over the years.

My dream tank is a 450g with a 500g gravity fed refugium. So, you know where I stand.

Refugiums are cool, the bigger the better. If the fuge is not big enough then you will still need other filtration like skimmer's etc. Some of my tanks run refugium only, some have equipment. The refugium only tanks do the best by far with fishg health and coral growth. I just don't have the space in my living room for a larger refugium on one of my tanks, the wife insists we need a couchy. Silly girl.

Hello,
+1 on having a refugium. I have had tanks without a refugium in the past, and will never have one without a refugium ever again.

Matt

I have had many tanks without refugiums and many with now. The only tanks that I have had much success with HAVE them. It could just be coincidence but I doubt it :D My last tank had a 40G refugium and it was the healthiest, fastest growing tank I have ever had. Least amount of work I have ever had to do on a tank too.

Pledo - what type of corals do you have that benefit?
I added a protein skimmer last Fall when I got a bunch of coral frags in, I currently have softies and zoas/palys. I'm wondering if I should go back to skimmer-less.
