To upgrade Apex or Not?

Zalick

My reef tanks my wallet
I have an apex classic system. My display unit just went out. My options are to replace the display unit ($99) or upgrade the whole system: head unit, display & 2 EB8 ($1000).

My question to those who have owned both: Is it worth upgrading?

Thanks!

I also have the classic and about a year ago was in the same position. I opted for the replacement as I could find no rationale for upgrading.

Thanks for the info. The only potential benefit I've read about is built in wifi. That alone doesn't justify $400 for the head unit (but I'd love to have it).

The built in wifi was also the only difference I found. Makes no financial sense at all. Sometimes some of us, me included, work overtime to try to justify buying the newest gadget. That is why this is an addiction hiding as a hobby.

Zalick,

You can also replace the display with an Amazon Fire. It is cheaper, and a nicer display. There are a few videos on this - I haven't done it myself, but it looks really nice.

If you are interested in the trident when it comes out the older models will not run them. Can you just Use the apex app on your phone?

I can use the app, but with the classic Apex you really need the display unit because sometimes the internet connection gets dropped.

I watched the video. Really cool! That only works with the newer head unit that has built-in wifi or if the classic unit is connected to the internet. Sometimes my unit drops the connection... So I need a way to still access the controls.

You do realize that you can use the tablet regardless of whether you have internet or not? As long as it stays connected to your local network(internet is different) you can still access the old apex pages(before fusion). 192.168.1.xxx(whatever the IP of your apex is).

It's very similar to fusion, just predates it, and it's local not in the cloud if you lose internet.

Yup. My Apex is not directly connected to my router. I use a Netgear Powerline to connect the two. The Powerline can be finicky. The location of my apex makes it challenging, but not impossible, to disconnect the powerline and directly connect my laptop. I can do it, but I prefer not to. :)
