Mine stayed like that for about 3-4 months then one day He started opening up now he is pretty much always open. Even where i cut him off a rock the couple cells that were left over are all sprouting.
There is no need to target feed a leather unless you want to speed up growth. Leathers are very hardy and easy to frag. I routinely take a razor blade and cut pieces off of mine to grow out for friends. They heal very quickly.
Plus there are many different species all of which are referred to as toadstools. There is one ive seen called a long tentacled toadstool and that I believe is what you are referring to.
