Not really advanced, but some of the folks visiting this forum might have an idea:

Who wins this one? The base of the leather is covered with star polyps up about 2-3".

My bet is the star polyps eventually win ;)

I had zoanthids growing up a montipora digitata. After about a year the zoanthids killed the base of the montipora and the whole colony collapsed and fell apart.

Hmmm, figured that might be the case. I will have to see if I can peel the star polyps back.

I agree, the polyps will just overgrow and cause physical restriction of the leather once they get to the cap.

Should peel back easily, if you have trouble getting the "peel" started you could certainly slip a razor blade/knife under the edge of the polyps and create an incision through the mat. If you hit the leather it certainly won't cause any problems.

Cool, thanks for the tip!! I need to get off my butt and give that a whirl.
