Toledo Zoo

O.K. I am officially a "reef geek", I went to the zoo today just to go to the aquarium(I'm a loser, yea I know)it was free today before 12 noon.I can say, I did'nt regret it one bit, though I would have expected better displays for the saltwater tanks it was still pretty cool. They had a jellyfish displays that was phenomanal to look at.they also had a tank with some black tip reef sharks and a few other reef fish, and I had the oppurtunity to watch a mantis shrimp (about 6'' long) slice a fishy in two, so cool. They even had some neat FW fish.I recomend it,I you have the time on your hands go check it out,it was pretty exciting for me at least.

Hey ur not a geek...

My daughter drags me there just to see the huge porcupine pufferfish there...the one that is like a foot long.

It will be a horrible day in my household when that guy passes away...

Oh yeah, that boy is huge. He's in the same tank with the moray eel that pokes his head out every once in a while. They're both ginormous! I was somewhat dissappointed with the coral reef. The rockwork looks just like a brick wall.

You mean this guy?

Another pic - a bit fuzzy though. He was pretty feisty that day.

And one animal had a special message for Dwayne while I was there-

I did'nt see the puffer he might be on vacation. And the reef tanks rockwork was'nt to thrilling, they could have at least used real LR.

Dang, I could bring my whole clan to a meeting if it were at the zoo. Cool idea. I could even act like, "hey, why don't we go to the zoo?" and she'd be like "ok", and when we got there I'd be like "hey, I know that guy", and she'd be like "ok", and I'd be like "hey, I know that guy too", and she'd be like "ok", and I'd be like "I'm goin' to go say hi", and she'd be like, "we'll be at the playground", and I'd be like "sweeeeeet".

sorry, I had my Seth Green moment

I gotta admit he is pretty cool...

He has been in the aquarium since 1990. I have only seen him "blow-up" four times and I have been there for ten years. I will give you guys a tour if you want but you will have to pay your own way into the zoo (I can only promise this if you promise me that you will vote yes on our levies on May 2nd:) ). As far as the reef goes, the inital set up didn't involve boat loads of money. Contrary to popular belief, most "zoo aquariums" have pretty small budgets so sometimes you have to settle for tufa rock with a little live rock on top (I wish we didn't have to). The rock work could be better but the tank dimensions (10'x3'x4') don't really provide the space to have a neat design and allow some of your more "light needy" corals to be close to the surface. The rock work was done with several peoples input so some times your ideas get trumped;) . The really cool small polyp stuff is behind the scenes. We recieved a grant to do a propagation system and it has more than enough metal halides above it, while the display could use a few more.

Were you at the zoo on Sunday? I saw a picture of you holding your baby and I thought I saw a guy pushing a stroller that looked like you.

You're right, there aren't too many short fat white guys with goatees in Toledo (baseball cap optional). I'll bet each of you can name at least 3 :lolspin:

Nope, I wasn't there Sunday. We're too busy packing for vacation. We are zoo members who live in Toledo and have voted for every single zoo levy that pops up. We average 10-15 zoo visits each year. My kids have their route memorized, is that bad?

There was a neat article in the Blade on Sunday about female lizards laying fertilized eggs, even though no male was present. I thought only frogs could do that.

Brad,

You still willing to give TRAC a tour of the Aquarium? If you guys want we were trying to set up a tour for some time in May. Everyone from TRAC and NORA would be welcome of course. I was at the zoo this weekend as well. I have a membership and usually my girlfriend and I go there pretty much every weekend to walk around.
