too bad dinos aren't all extinct

They - it - all lives in my tanks. :fun5:

I'm trying the bump-the-pH-and-alk-up and the lights out thing to see if that helps get rid of the snot.

My pH is about 8.35 but alk is about 14. People have recommended I try to get pH to 8.5 but I don't know how to do that without bringing the alk up even more - which I don't think I should do.

I've brought pH from about 7.9 - 8.0 to near 8.4 with Marine buffer from Seachem. Before that, I dosed with Kalk for three nights in a row and didn't get any bump. Of course, I didn't really know what I was doing with the Kalk anyway so we used a really cautious dose. Now I'm turning lights out for three days.

Thoughts?

Your Alk is way too high. Your are going to run into other problems worse than dino. I don't know your experience level with dosing but if you have questions give me a call 5202406659

worst thing ever. I managed to beat them twice. The first time it took me 5 months.

Long story short:

Get some of this:http://static.keebali.com/thereeftank.com/gallery/files/3/5/dsc_0022r_mrswages.jpg

This will help you raise alk and calcium in the same ratios that will help cancel each out preventing alk from spiking that high

Keeping ph around 8.5 was the magic number for me over 3 days with lights out, at some point I was pouring pickling lime slurrys every couple of hours to keep it up

Few notes:

Dinos love water changes, so stay away from doing any

Don't bother basting or trying to blow them away from the rocks (they always come back)

You will know you have won when they all turn a pale gray color, If you see any brown continue dosing

Your Alk is currently very high, over dose calcium to bring it back down before you begin dosing.

Thanks everyone. I just added some Ca and I'll check again in the AM. I may be hitting you up for more advice.

Mrs wages is pretty muck kalk. Go slow, you don't want to raise your PH too much allay o e time. Bring it up slow.

Holy smokes Oscar - I just clicked the link. Maybe I could make some pickles while I'm at it :lmao:

pickling lime = kalkwasser

...just add wasser...

i have heard that bumble bee snails are super good at eating the stuff that the dinoflagellates live off of. that is supposedly how they help control various cyanos also...

any luck yet?
