Top down shots

I find it very difficult to hand hold the camera steady enough to shoot the type of top down macro shots I'd like to. So, I'd like to find a way to mount the camera so it's held steady when shooting down through the camera box.

I've seen some tripods that have a horizontal arm which looks like a nice setup.

When I talked with a guy at the local camera store, he suggested that the Slik 700DX tripod I have has a removable center column which could be inverted, and the camera could then be... and the words kind of became a blur after that.

I've subsequently confirmed I can remove the center column of the tripod and invert it, resulting in an upside down camera hanging on my tripod. I can probaly also tilt the head enough to shoot down into the tank. But, I'm not convinced that's much progress.

Seems like I'd be better off securing the camera to some 2x4s thrown across the top of the tank?

Long way of asking: is there an alternative but adequate way to secure the camera above the tank, or is getting a new tripod with a horizontal arm the best way to go?

Thanks!

I've been using a 5 gallon tank as a makeshift top-down box (the aquarium has some ledges that make it easy to suspend the tank above the corals). The problem I'm having is that I don't have a good way to keep the camera steady suspended over the tank and my hand held attempts don't cut it.

I'm sure I can rig something up (mount the camera to an aluminum bar and hoist it above the tank). But, I'm a complete novice at this. Figured it was likely I'm missing the obvious answers.

The only "commercial" solution I've found is a tripod with a horizontal arm. Wasn't really planning on buying another tripod just for this. Figured there was probably an adapter or something I could use with my current tripod... or some other simple answer.

Would love to see the setups folks are using when they take top-down shots (if they're doing anything other than hand-holding the camera).

Thanks for the response,

Mark
