Top Openings of a Large Acrylic Tank

I have a 180g Oceanic tank (6x2x2) and what I love about it is being able to place large rocks in it thru the top and also being able to clean the glass front/sides with my hand if I need to. I have a magnetic cleaner, but there are just some times when I have to get the old arm and hands wet with a scrubber or scraper.

My next tank will be a 300g acrylic....8ft long, 24" high and 30" wide or larger. I have seen several large tanks with 2 or 3 cut-outs on top. I know the acrylic top provides alot of support and holds the tank together. From what I can tell, there is about 6"+ of acrylic from the front of the tank to the closest edge of the cut-out on top. With this type set-up, you would have to be almost on top of the tank to get your arm in and to the bottom of the tank.

If the acrylic was 3/4" or even 1" thick along the sides, would it be possible to have a 2" to 4" lip around the top of the tank? I know there has to be some front to back support similar to the 12'+ wide piece that along the top in my glass tank.

Thanks in advance for any help/suggestions.

Hi Ron,

If you used 3/4" or better, you can get away with 3" perimeter flange with a coupla crossbraces provided you don't have any holes in the top flange(s).

HTH,
James
