Im actally on vacation down here and i have noticed alot of mangroves. is it illegal to bring them back to chicago with me? I have some with leaves and some that are just pods. so any feed back would be great.

It might very well be illegal. A lot is being done to protect the Mangrove forests, which have been significantly damaged over the years.

Here's a few snippets from the state Dept. of Env Protection website. Local laws can be more strict, and many areas of the state have additional protections in place.

State and local regulations have been enacted to protect Florida's mangrove forests. Local laws vary. Be sure to check with officials in your area prior to taking any action to determine if a permit is required. Further information on state regulations is available at http://www.dep.state.fl.us/water/wetlands/mangroves/mangrove.htm.

The trimming and alteration of mangroves is governed by Sections 403.9321-403.9333 of the Florida Statutes, Mangrove Trimming and Preservation Act. The mangrove program is implemented by the Department as well as several delegated local governments. Mangrove trimming and alteration may be done by property owners under certain exemptions, as specified in Section 403.9326 of the Florida Statutes.

I visit the keys very often and it's been my understanding that you can do what you want the pods, you just can't touch anything that has grown out past that point.
