Tribulations of Reefing

Hair algae, you horrible, horrible thing.

Really - It has never bothered me. In fact I like seeing it sway in the current. I would just rather see beautifully colored corals in there instead.

So I buy a GFO reactor. I set it up, macro in the sump, and watch my phosphates plummet. (Nitrates were always the lowest color on the test kit).

At this point I notice something odd, something in the back of my tank. My nine-year-old black and white clownfish is laying on her side in the back.

My heart sinks until my dotty back swims too close and my clown suddenly shoots up to shoo her away. Perfectly fine, what was she doing? Hosting on the algae.

I go cross-eyed at this point. The thing I want gone from my display tank is suddenly something that makes my oldest tank denizen rather happy.

Two weeks later, the algae is receding incredibly, the stuff that is left is turning a dark brown and dying off. I see my clown sitting in the back of the tank against the wall looking incredibly dejected.

Apparently I need to invest in an anemone. I can't stand those eyes!

I know the cross eyed feeling lol. Buy an anemone, a torch, Frogspawn or something big and bushy and your clown my host in it.

+1 on that. Sounds like your clown is pretty much primed to host whatever you put in your tank. I think he will be much happier when you do :~)

I'm hoping so, she's been through so much in my tanks.

Time to find something to put in that she will enjoy and that I will as well.

I have to do some planning! Thanks for the advice on the other hosting options. Anemones, while I really like them, still scare me a little because of their mobility.

I had a condy that was about 6-8 in and it never moved..I have two rbta and maxi mini that never move either..I would go for it once they settle in and are happy they tend to stay put
