Trigger System Elite VS. Sump?

I currently have a Aqueon Proflex 4 on a 120gal Aqueon double mega flow and I am thinking of getting a Trigger system but cant decide which version to get. I do not have a ATO and not planning on it due to I dont want the eye sore next to my tank ATM.

I'm sure this has been talked about on here before but I could not find the thread.

What are your thoughts?

I could go either way but.............

I currently have the ruby elite (the red one) in the 36". I have been thrilled with it. The biggest difference between the 2 is the separate refugium section. I have my overflows plumbed so that one of them is T'd to the refugium with a ball valve so I can slow the flow. The refugium sits toward the front, and I can have macroalgae as well as other creatures if I want in there to watch.

oh yeah, the elite also has the probe holders built in which is a nice addition if you use ph/temp probes

That is good to know. I was thinking one drain to the Refugium and the second drain to the sock. So I take it you got two drains both going to the socks but one of those lines have been T'd off to the refugium ?

I was thinking one full drain line into the refugium might be to much flow

I have the 36" ruby sump on my 120 and am happy with it. If you want more control of the flow in your fuge as stated above, the elite would probably be better. If you get the sump, you can use the middle section as a fuge. I used to have some macro in there but now I just have some rock in the middle section and some rubble in the bottom shelf of the bubble trap. Like the elite, the sump also has probe holders.
I'd also recommend getting an ATO, it'll make your life a lot easier and keep the salinity in your tank more stable. If you get a 36" sump, you should be able to find a container for your top off water that will fit next to it in the stand, no?

Both the elite or sump versions have the built in probe holders, as long as you get the Ruby model. The Trigger Systems Crystal models don't have the probe holders. Basically, if you plan on running a fuge, then Elite would likely be a better option as you have more control of the flow through the fuge portion. I don't plan on running a fuge and just wanted alot of sump area for my skimmer, reactors, etc., so i opted for the sump version.

If you're growing nutrients in the fuge, do you not lose a lot of if to the skimmer since the water flows from fuge to skimmer? I've considered this model because my skimmer will fit!

Can any owners (or really anyone with experience in sump/fuge design) comment on this? It seems like it would be better if the fuge drained into the return. But I'm new to sumps, so someone may be able to enlighten me on this.

The water flow through the elite model goes
1- skimmer>return
2-fuge>skimmer>return

Most others I see are skimmer>fuge>return OR skimmer>return<fuge.

So what's the benefit if the elite's water flow. I found a good deal on a used one, but I want to understand this first.

I have the Ruby Sump 36" model and have been pretty happy with it. My only complaint is that my skimmer is large enough (Octopus Diablo XS160) that it would barely fit in the first chamber, and even if I did put it there, I would have to remove it each time to change the filter socks. So I ended up putting in the refugium section and therefore have no refugium. In the future, I would purchase a design that has filter socks along the left hand side and gives more useable room for skimmer and fuge. Or maybe I just should have purchased the Elite model.

Here is a link showing the water flow through the elite:

Bringing this to the top again, considering this sump and have the same question, will the benefits of the fuge be minimized since it flows into skimmer? I am hoping to have a mandarin (127G, Barebottom, Live Rock setup) and want to make sure I have enough pod population to keep him happy (although I will try to find one that is feeding off pellets/flake in the store.

Cheers.

Take a look at the eShopps line of refugiums. The water from the tank is split so the refugium's water is not skimmed. I'm setting up the R-100 for a 34 gallon DSA cube and plan to start a build thread soon.

I just got the emerald 34. i really love this sump. I dont use the refugium part of the sump, because I recently set up a biopellet reactor...

I have the Ruby Elite 36 gallon.I run 2 drains from my aquarium to the holes (2 ),located in the sump.I run an external skimmer and it drains in the refugium .I put socks on the 3 drains.

I decided to purchase the Trigger Systems Emerald 34 about six months ago and this was one of the best purchases I've made. The quality of the sump and material used is excellent.

Compared to my last antiquated sump from twenty years ago, the Trigger Systems sump are surely the top of the line equipment. In my refugium section, I'm only using cheato and my light source is a simple heat lamp with a 100 watt 6500 K power compact bulb. My cheato is growing like weeds and I need to thin out the Cheato every few weeks.

Over all, the Emerald 34 is very roomy, we'll constructed and this sump almost runs dead silent.

Thanks,
Randy

We have a massive old 8' Trigger Systems "sump".

Was built by the owner of the company as his refugium, but we ended up getting it and now it's our sump.

Really nice build, no fancy acrylic colors or anything, but built like a tank.
