Trouble finding decent powder blue tang locally

I have been in search of a medium sized one for over two months to round up my final fish addition but came up empty. Anyone seen one of those with good health and coloration in a LFS nearby? The ones I have seen were so far small and pale. I almost decided to give up on him and instead get a purple tang, but guess what no luck either.

Is it just the time of the year or all the fish suppllies are drying out? Thanks in advance.

Around the holidays, it gets kinda short around this time.

Ive seen some nice one at johns, his fish are always healthy. Never lost one from there.

Exotic gets them all the time. They always look healthy. Good price too. I think $39-$49 but not sure.

I keep meaning to go there, but I always forget where it is at ( i know now). It always slips me though.

They moved to a new location nearby, the new store is much bigger but I haven't seen good supply of PBT lately.

Where is Johns?

Exotic Aquarium is down Franklin. I know if you take the 99 HWY, you have to exit I believe, 47th West, and make a left on Franklin Blvd. It will be on your LEFT side

If you are coming from Wal-Mart on Florin (where their previous store was at) you head towards Franklin and make a Right. Exotic is a few blocks up on your RIGHT side this time.

It's fairly large, I was a bit disappointed with the assortment of Saltwater Stuff, but much better than their Florin Store.

Actually when they were in their old Florin store I have seen great supplies of PBTs and other more exotic but common SW fish often. Once they had over ten beatiuful looking PBTs on sale for $24.99/ea unfortunately my tank wasn't ready.

But since the new store opened I agree not much going on. I did see some very rare fish though, such as some rare angels selling for $300 to $1,800 a piece, black tangs for $150/ea., and hybrid powder tangs once for $99/ea.

Save your money. I have found them to be ick magnets and never survive. but maybe you will have better luck!

I know which is why I have prepared so long just to give this guy a try. I have an over-rated UV filter and a neon goby for some time now waiting for the right occasion.

You did not find any PBTs at Exotic? I was there last Friday picking up a blue spotted jawfish and I swore I saw one in the back tanks.

Thanks for the link, I have looked at their web page in the past but did not see them selling fish, guess they just don't ship fish but still sell to walk-ins. Will pay them a visit soon.

BTW Exotic did have one PBT with the best color I have seen, except two things: he was a little too big and he had lost one eye. What a shame.

Was at Ost this afternoon And they had 3 about 4" and did not look to bad. They all had 2 about 2".

Are we talking powder blue tangs? I was there too but did not see any 4"ers which is the size I am looking for. They had one 2" looked very pale.

exotic just got a shippment in tonite. Call them or stop by tomarrow. They just might have one.

Thanks Troy, I went down there last evening got myself a really nice one. Knock on wood he will make it then my tank setup will be complete, until I start to add coral some day of course.

They also had a what they called hybrid powder blue, though I thought he looked like a gold rim tang, but had more bright yellow/golden rim and more bluer body so they might be right. A real nice one too.

We are on the hunt for a Powder Blue pair for our 380g setup. We saw a pair at Steinhart doing their "dance" and ever since that has been our goal to be able to successfully house such a pair ourselves. If anyone knows of any "leads" on where to locate such a pair, please PM me and let us know.. Thanks

P.S. I know it likely won't be cheap.

Did you mean a mated pair? I did not know such thing even existed in captivity. That'd be priceless.

as I said, I saw a pair doing a dance (that was similar to what mated mandarins do, I should have added) at Steinhart, so a mated pair does exist in captivity, whether or not they are truly mating and making baby powder blues is another story altogether :)

But then I remembered reading somewhere tangs don't mate in pair but in large group, huge number of eggs get fertilized in the current then drifted away, a few lucky eggs end up somewhere safe and live on. Which can be very difficult to duplicate in captivity.

On the other hand, humans are known to do the impossible.
