I have read about using it as base rock, but I did a google search and cant fin any where to buy it except Britian. Does anyone know of where to get some or if its even safe?
I know it is reef safe. I have used it and it does make great base rock. However, I do not know where to find a local source. Try Ebay as many ppl sell it from time to time.
Your local fish store doesn't carry it? I just put about 25# or so in my tank purchased from my lfs. It is real light/porous and crumbly.
I think it might make a great live rock once it has been in the tank for awhile.
My lfs sells it for $1.25/pound. I put about 25-26#s in my 45 hex. This was actually pretty nice. Don't get me wrong. It's not as nice looking as what some of the on-line dealers have for base rock or live rock. The tufa my lfs used to sell was pretty much just round/oblong looking stuff, but this tufa has a little bit more of shape to it. I like it because it is so porous and light, that it should make good "live" rock once it gets cycled and you introduce a few different critters. It is rather crumbly, though.
I used alot Tufa in my 55 as base rock and would not do it again. I got two pieces that were half decent, but most of it was solid and not very porous. It also took a very, very long time to become live. But that was my experience, others may have had better luck.
If you are looking for some half decent live/base rock for a good price, I got mine from thatfishplace.com.
I have found lace rock to be much better then tufa for a base rock.
The tufa looks pourous when you get it and after the water runs over it for a month it starts to turn smooth. But encrusting corals grow better on a smooth surface and spread faster but I still prefer the natural look of the lace rock. JMO
Tufa rock I read once is supposed to absorb nitrates/phosphates only to dump them back in the water column after about 2 years.
I know live rock is expensive but there really is no substitute in my opinion.
