tunze 6100 pumps.....do I need another, need opinions

for the 180, I have 2 6100 pumps and a wavebox...do you think to even it all out I should have one more of the pumps? I have an oppportunity to purchase one for 200 bucks.....but if I don't need it, what do you think?
 
If it is the newer design (either the 6101 or the newer model 6100 with the single impeller assembly) then I'd go ahead and get it. You may not end up needing it in which case you could sell it. If it is the older version 6100 then I think I'd pass. Reason being is the newer ones would sell more easily if you needed to turn it around.

Yes, if that is brown it is an older model one. I can't quite tell from the pic if it is brown or black.

Also, make sure it is truely a 6100. 6000s and 6100s both say 6100 on the pump. The only difference between the two is the transformer (the round donut thing).
 
it is black......has the "real" 6100 black disk thing...I went ahead and purchased it for 210 shipped with a magnet...you are right, I can always sell it if not needed. I was looking for another pump OR was going to get the additional wavebox for the other side but I think that might be overkill since I got a little bit bigger return pump as well........what do you think of that?
 
Wow, you need a wave box and two tunze powerhead to circulate 180G? I am contemplating a 180 but I did not realize I need that much flow....

actually I am putting in 2 tunze pumps on one side and one pump and a wavebox on the other!!
gonna have some serious flow!
 
There will be an amazing amount of flow in the tank. 1500 gph from the return pushing through 2 penductors, 3x6100 Streams, and a Wavebox. The Streams can be turned down while the corals, etc are small, and cranked up over time as the flow demands increase.
 
You can pulse the streams so they likely will not be setup to blow 3000 gph all at the same time. My guess sum total flow from the streams would probably be around 5000 gph at any given time + the penductors which may put the total flow at ~10000 gph + the wavebox. Which is about 55x.

It depends. For some of the ones last made in 2005, I think the only difference is the color and the impeller assembly. Older ones had a different driver that could cause as much as a 25% difference between streams on the same controller (100% for one pump would be way faster than 100% with another). The newer drivers are much more consistent. There may be other differences as well, but I can't remember.
 
yeah I figure we will have the pumps down not at full volume for a while to allow for everything to get settled in BUT it is not bare bottom but made sure I did not get super fine sand.
 
That is going to be an incredible amount of flow and movement. I suspect you'll end up turning the streams way down.

2 things for thought:
I think I remember Wayne settling on only 2 wave boxes because the 3rd was just too much... on a much bigger tank. Those things when tuned produce something amazing.

Have you accounted for the added head from the penductors on the return pump when estimating the output. Hope you bought the 1" ones. The orifice is slightly bigger iirc and they're shorter, thus less obtrusive. Just wondering if you've seen what they do to head with respect to flow through them.

I believe the 1" typically have a .375" orifice... and with 750gph (12.5gpm) through it that chart shows that amount of flow will add 20ft of head to that run of pipe. I think y'all threw out 1500gph on the return, and split 2 ways. It's nothing to worry about. Just saying with the large increase in head you actually won't be getting what you think you will out of a penductor. But it'll still be a lot.
 
Having another tunze will not be too much flow actually you will be able to place it in another location in the tank and tie it in with the wave box and just use it to blow through the bottom parts of your rock. Some times we get to caught up on numbers and not placement and use.
