Turbo Snail dead?

Hey Everyone,

I just moved my tank from Dayton to Columbus, OH (about an hour and a half). I had to break down the tank and was only able to hold onto about 40% of the old aquarium water. After putting one of my turbos in after acclimating, it seems he does not want to cling to anything. I put him in one spot last night (and he had retracted into his shell at this point), he didn't cling to the rock, and he is in the same spot this morning, and has still not come out yet. I was told dead snails have a strong odor about them and that hermits in the tank will begin picking at the snail if it is dead. No hermits yet and no smell. However, is this sort of behavior normal? I'm pretty sure I acclimated him well before putting him in.

Parameters
Nitrites - .1 ppm
Nitrates - 10 ppm
KH - 10
Temp - 75...and hopefully rising
PH - 7.8

Not too crazy for after transport...but the nitrite level is making me wonder if the snail has indeed passed, and I don't want it to go up with a lot of the old filtering bacteria probably not making it through the move.

Any thoughts would be wonderful.

Thanks in advance.

I suppose the first question I would have is what kind of turbo?

Turbo is a genus of snail. Members of that genus may or may not be suited for life in a reef aquarium. My experience with mexican turbos (The knobby greenish ones) is that they don't live long in reefs. However I have kept three very large Brazillian Black turbos in my reef for several years now.

They are sensetive to temperature change. How warm or cold did they get during the move? I see that your temp is at 75 how much colder was it?

I would say that if the snail doesn't move in another day you should remove it.

When turbo's get stressed they can pull into their shells for several days. I had one do it for a week when I added it. It came out and was fine eventually.

Agreed. When I added my mexican turbo, he hid in his shell for about three days before coming out an exploring. Now he is an algae machine!

It is a mexican Turbo. Unfortunately, the water temp probably bowed to around 71 degrees! My other mexican turbo seems to be doing alright.

I appreciate everyone's comments. Hopefully he comes out soon.

Thanks,

Andy
