Turbo Snails

I have turbo snails sitting in my skimmer return trap from time to time
That’s not the problem they always find their way out
But I seen them in there one day
The next day I had a COMPLETELY empty snail shell
24 hour time span
I do daily head counts
Pretty hard for a hermit to get in there as it is pretty isolated
unless hermits can fly
any ideas?
THX

Hermits can be good climbers. I have one in my sump that climbs all over using everything imaginable to go up and down and over walls.

but can they carf a whole good sized snail in 24 hours?

Hermits eat almost no stop. Like all crabs they scavange a lot. The crab might be able to eat the whole snail out of the shell, would depend on the size of the two animals. I have been a few thread on them taking down and devouring one in very short periods.

maybe the hermit hitch-hicked on its back. mine do it cleaning the snails constantly. i have 4 turbos about the size of a golfball. i think theyre around 4 years old, cant really remember. they dont mess with the Astrea's or Nasserius, but they have killed and eaten ceriths and then used their shells when done. it takes several hours, i've watched it happen to many times. its mother nature in my eyes, survival of the reef.
john m...:smokin: :p

yeah, i noticed that EVERY single time i put a turbo in my tank, it is an empty shell the next day as well. so far i have 7 empties. when i go look in at night the other snails are finishing it off. i don't get it because i have 4 other types of snails and they are all accounted for? strange to me as well?

do these snails ever breed in captivity?
cuz they sure look like mini turbos
Adults still dropping off one at a time
down to 5 small and the 2 jumbo mexicans

And what is that gook to the bottom left?
a sponge or a turbo cocoon ?
Thx

The little snail is probably Collonista, which is a much smaller relative of the Turbo. Are you finding that slime near the dead shells? If so that would suggest that you have the predatory worm Oenone fulgida, which feeds on snails.
