Turn off main pump at night

I have overflow noises that is bearable during the daytime but unacceptable at night b/c my 75 Gallon reef tank is in the room next to our bedroom. Is it feasible to turn of the main pump at night and have an internal tank pump be the source of flow. My biggest concern with this is adequate oxygenation.

Thanks.

The only problem Is if the heater is in the sump, then you wont be heating the tank, nor would you be filtering any water if you have filter media.

I myself wouldnt turn it off, oxygenation all depends on what type of fishload you have.

It's feasible, but I don't know if I'd recommend such a change every night. It'd be hard for the tank to establish well with the daily change. Oxygenation shouldn't be a huge deal with an internal pump (though it'll be weaker by necessity), but it won't be optimal. Just that the circulation pattern couldn't get established, and there'd be some die-off in the sump every night (I assume you have a sump off your overflow? What do you have in it?).

Have you tried buffering the overflow by finding something that breaks the water splashing? After a while a lot of us get used to the water sound, becomes like crickets (or traffic sounds, depending on where you live). :)

Put a ball valve between the overflow and sump. adjust it so the water flow is a little slower. This will cause the water to back-up in the plumbing and the gurgling will quit.

do not use a ball valve on the drain side of the sump, if anything use a ball valve on the pump side and crank down the pump output a little bit. Are you using some kind of durso or stockman? If not why not build yourself a 5 dollor durso standpipe to get rid of the splashing?

if it is the actual pump you are talking about being to loud, then your out of luck, get a quiet one

Besides all of the thing already listed here, all of the water in the overflow box and plumbing would become toxic every night and then returned to the system every morning. Work on quieting the flow instead. The durso stand pipe should make it bearable. If it makes you feel better, my tank is 3 feet from my head while i sleep at night. I can't sleep without the water noise anymore. If my tank quits running in the middle of the night, i wake up like my alarm went off.
