Type of sand...

I am starting a Oceanic 29 Biocube and plan to start with FOWLR. I would like to have a sand bottom but am not sure what type of sand is best and/or why. I am hoping you can offer me some advice or point me in the right direction for information. I prefer the look of a 1" deep very fine sand bottom, but will put in whatever will be the most beneficial.

I greatly appreciate your insight.

Thanks,
Dave

I use argamax sand from Dr. Foster & Smith and like it.

Here's a description:

Aragamax Sand
This super-fine sand (0.2 to 1.22 mm grain size) is ideal for shallow static beds and bottom covering of up to 1" in depth. Also known as "oolitic" sand, this sugar-sized sand naturally aids in the reduction of nitrates. Its fine round grains pass easily through the gills of gobies and other sand-sifting organisms. The smooth, round grains are gentle on soft-bellied sharks and rays. Pure and safe â€"œ metal, ash, and silica free. White in color. 30 pounds.

1 bag should work for you. I have a 24 gallon nano cube and used about 22 lbs.

What is Southdown sand and why is it beneficial?

Thanks...just learning here so I appreciate any info.

Southdown is live sand,& IMO the best.O &

Southdown is not LIVE sand when you buy it, it will become live sand after you add Live from another tank..

BUT southdown sand is very good for the reef.. if you find it..

I actually have some Southdown sand, but it is in my kids sandbox. The store I originally bought it from last year is now closed. This is probably wishful thinking but is there anyway to clean it to make sure it is clean enough for the reef tank? Or should I scrap that idea and try to find a new bag of it?

Thanks for all your comments!

Dave
