tyree toadstool closed for 2 months

Stoney Reefer
i have had a tyree toadstool for about 6 months now. it was my first coral purchase. about 2 months ago it closed up and even began to grow algae. well two days ago it started to extend its green polyps. can anyone lend me some insight as to why it would do such a thing? all my parameters have been stable and lighting has not changed. in fact nothing has changed.

Mine has done this for a couple of years, and have never had a good answer as to why it happens. Tagging along for a good answer.

Mine too, opens up maybe 1 or 2 times a month for a day or so. In my opinion leathers are the most useless corals of them all. I would rather have algae in my tank, atleast it does something.

hahaha i totally agree with you guys. i just love how when mine is open it looks like a green nuclear explosion its so bright. i even tried to remove it but the disk it was on is so cemented to the rock it wouldn't budged. guess it was a sign to not remove it.

p.s. have any of you guys see growth even though the polyps aren't extended? mine looks exactly the same.

What other softies do you have in the tank? I have 9+ softies spread over at least 4 genuses. I never get all of them open at the same time. Softies compete with each other chemically. I know it is time for me to change carbon when one of my sinularias closes up for extended periods.

Have you tried changing flow or relocating it to a different area of the tank? Something is causing it stress if its retracted for extensive periods of time. I started checking my tank several hours after lights out with a flashlight and found my emerald crab laying in my toadstool every night. Sometimes it would retract, sometimes I would still have extension with a retracted imprint around the crab. I did move mine around at first until it showed the best extension which was in low to moderate flow.

Along for the ride,Mines been closed for almost 2 weeks. It's closed for a few days before but never this long.Stable water quality, everything else is doing great. Its an all softies tank.

Mine was just a frag when I got it a year ago. It has since split and is open almost constantly while the lights are on. It is on a rock in the front of a 28 gal Biocube. It is getting almost too big for the tank and I'm going to have to take one of the "trunks" out and put it in my reef tank. Hope it does as well there. The lighting is whatever came w/ the Biocube and flow is low on bottom front.

I have had two toadys for about 2 years. About two months ago they both at the same time quit extending, with absolutely no changes made by me. About 3 weeks ago i bought a new one (all opened up and pretty) and put it in my tank and it closed and has stayed closed. Im perplexed as well. Last week I started adding Iodine(very very cautiously) and the new one and one of the elders starting to just barely extend ( just breaking the surface about a 16th of an inch). From all the information Ive gathered thru this experiment(reef keeping) everything/everybody indicates iodine can be very lethal to the whole system, so before I continue with iodine I first must get a test kit, which Im planning on doing over this weekend. I will post any results and will keep looking for any of your inputs.

I had a chance to break away from my weekly hussle and bustle and got an iodine test kit. After several tests and two reference tests i have a defficiency. In fact it wouldnt even make a reading. Im now beginning an iodine addition to bring up the values. The test kits are relatively inexpensive and not too terribly hard to do, i hope this helps someone.

i am happy to say mine has regularly opened since i began this thread. i have also began dosing warner marine "lugol's iodine." i started to do so after i saw it opening so i don't know why it was closed. i have not tested for it but i am seeing better color and polyp extension just like the bottle says.
