Unhappy Green Star Polyps

I got a 3 in. plug of green star polyps a month ago, once in my tank they came out after a good day and half and would stay out in the light and go back in when it was dark. All was good for a couple of weeks. I then had to build up my rockwork and thus relocate it. I'm on my third location and it's still not happy and no longer coming out. First move was up at the top but in greater flow. Then I put it at the bottom, a little less light, no flow. Now it's back at the top, plenty of light, no flow. All my parameters are good (although having trouble with temp, has been hanging around 76 while both heaters are set for 79) and everyone else is happy. Any thoughts? Where are your star polyps happy?

Thanks!

Leave them in one place! mine didnt come out for 2 weeks after i moved them. Now its trying to take over the tank.

Mine as also on the bottom in a moderate flow area.

Here's a pic

I did the same thing you did. I had to remove all of my rock to get out an over groan pistol shrimp that thought he was a backhoe. That's another story. It took the star polyps about two weeks to even show a sign of life. They look fine now.

You never said what kind of lighting you have - hard to say how high up they should be in YOUR tank without this info.

Mine like it on the bottom of the tank, but my lighting is MH - pretty intense.

As far as flow, they seem to like swaying in the breeze - like tall grass in a gentle wind, not a huricane, not a dead spot.

Whatever you do, they need to get used to the spot they're in, so put them where you want them, and leave them there for a couple weeks and see if they like it.

Yes, I agree with Fast Fred about needing to know what lighting you are using. I have mine under 2x40W Coralife 10K's and 2x40W Actinic .03's for the moment (saving up for an HQI/PC unit :D ) with medium flow through my tank. I have them setting about 4 1/2 inches above the sandbed on top of one of my LR's where they are bathed in light and they are doing fine. I have to move them every once in a while as I add in new LR and rearrange the old. When I do they close up and usually will not come out until the next day. I have never had them stay closed for more than 12 hours though.

What are your tanks parameters at? My guys have been roughing it for a few months now in regular aged tap water - my RO/DI should be here next week! But they still do fine even with my Nitrate level up near 20ppm and calcium levels as low as 300ppm. Now that I have all the proper tests I can use my supplements effectively. I will get a pic of them when I get home and then post another after I have transitioned the tank to RO/DI filtered water and gotten my params in order.

a god friend of mine has some in his tank and to tell u the truth their doing to well but he has 440 watts of light on a 120 tank the stars are doing fine up high down low in fast current and in slow current

Sorry, 2 150 watt metal halides 10,000 k and 2 actinics (can't remember watts) it's a coralife fixture. They are half way up tank at the moment and I'm not going to touch them. Thanks for the help!
