Sorry...I wasn't sure where to post this question. I can't just word it in a sentence or two because I think the details are important... so forgive me.
I bought a little orange hermit crab (not hairy) from the lfs and I am unsure what type it is.
The folks that worked there couldn't tell me either and believe that it came along with some live rock or (my guess) with the rest of the hermits they normally get.
It looks like an orange colored scarlett reef hermit except for its right claw...which is white and freckled and pretty big in comparison to its other arm( which is TINY...say the size of a small scarlett and the one I see most often grabbing things off the LR and sand). It can close itself off in its shell much better than say a scarlett with smaller claws.
I checked it out tonight with a flashlight and it literally LEAPED back WITH ITS SHELL about AN INCH in fright!! :eek2:
It also seems to be a lot more observant than other hermits. I can see its whole body move when focusing on something (maybe it was focusing on the shadows made by the flashlight...but none of my other hermits do that.).
This is the first day I've had it, and so far I haven't seen it damaging or hurting anything... just pulling hair algae off the live rock and sifting through the sand.
But should I be worried about its behavior? I have never seen a hermit act like this...
I will post a pic today...
