updating tank

hello fellow reefers,
I am moving my 75 gallon into a larger tank next month, my question is, being that I have almost 100lbs of live sand in there already, would it be wiser to get new sand or take out that sand and dump it in the newer tank and reuse it since it has plenty of life in it. It has been up and running for almost a year and a half. My main concern is starting a hair algae problem and nitrate problem. any advice would be appreciated. thank you

are you sure it's not going to start a hair algae problem, I've had that before in other tanks and its horrible to stop. but I do want to reuse it if I can becuase it's the grade that I like and I have almost 300 lbs between my tanks.

i dont think you should use your sand, you can start algae blooms and a few problems, you can use a few cups of that sand but thats about it, just my .02c

If you're concerned about kicking up ammonia to a level beyond what your system can handle, then you can just flush the sand. Put it in salt tubs half full and pour in some saltwater, mix it around, let it settle and then pour off the topwater. Do this 4 or 5 times. That will flush the majority of the decaying matter.

when i went from my 125 to my 210 i only used about 1/2 of the top portion of the sand & i waited till teh water was down to the sand to scoop it out i dint use the rest i put new sand in the tank.
the sand that was under that had a nasty smell, u will see when u dig in to it my sand bed was only about 3 inches

I would only seed the new sand with a little of the old stuff. wait till you see how cruddy 1 year old sand looks like when you start shifting it around
