I’m upgrading my tank from a 55g to a 90g. I want the 90g to be in the same spot as the current 55g.

Current 55g Stock List:
Yellow Tang
6 line
Firefish
Algae blenny
Zoas/hammer/Kenya (misc softy)

The 55g has ~60LB is fully cured LR (tanks been up for 3 months) and a 30g sump.

Im going to be doing a foam rock wall with macro rocks, also building pillars and islands out of totally dead dried LR.

How can I do this? The 90 will need to cycle. I can move the 55g and put the 90 in its place, but I only have one sump and it obviously needs to run on the 55g. I would only need the sump for the skimmer really I imagine.

Do I just move the 55g, install the 90g without a sump, then once its cycled add all my cycled rock fish/coral?

HELP!

If you're only going to run a skimmer, why don't you just get a plastic tub for the 55 gal in replace of the 30 gal sump so you can put the sump to your new 90 gal tank?

thats a good idea actually. I will do that.

But now the cycling/transfer issue.

Will i have to keep both tanks up for a long amount of time and slowly add everything to the 90g over the course of a few months? or is there a 'quick' solution?

I don't know if I did it right or not.... But I just did the same thing 55G to a 125G. But what I did was moved all the fish and coral's into my sump (30G) and used my 55G as a sump for my 125G. I put all the water into Rubbermaids and other tub's. I then filled the 125G with that water and more water. Once I got the tank clear and to the right temp and Salinity, I just put the fish and everything in my 125G. I figured it was just like doing a large water change (very large). Everything has survived so far. I only had both tanks running for 2 days, before putting the fish into the bigger tank. I also used all the same sand and Rock from the old tank. Hope that helps
