Use This?

Would boyancy be an issue without it actually placed on the back of the tank. That would be my main concern, is getting it to sink without whatever is making it do so leeching nasties into my water.

I made a foam rock background for my 72g when it was FW.

I used a sheet of Dow insulation. What you listed will work. The keys to success are twofold:

1. Cover the foam with sand / shells / etc and epoxy (I can't recall the product I used - if I heard the name I would know but I picked it up at a woodworking place. Basically the epoxy coating dries inert so it will seal in the foam. I remember putting on about 5 coats of epoxy and sand (plus some Rit Dye to color parts of it it) to give mine the look that I wanted (just like real rock). I don't think you would need that much but I would put on at least 2 or 3 coats of sand / epoxy .

2. When putting in your tank, you need to silicone it to the back glass. So the tank needs to be dry and you need to let it set up. make sure you run a solid strip of silicone all around the back edge before attaching it to the glass because you do not want water to get behind the foam

Wow, wasn't sure this was still out there. i haven't used this ISP for 6 or 7 years. Way back when I did this I made a simple web page showing what I did.
