Used water jugs

Took a trip to the local Ace Hardware store last night, and they had these used blue 5 gallon jugs for $4.99. Not exactly sure why they had them, but they did. After talking to the clerk, I found out that they had been used by a local restaurant to transport Margarita mix :strange:

Anywho, I brought them home and rinsed them out the best I could with my water hose and felt like I had most of the margarita smell gone. I also poured a half gallon of Distilled Vinegar in each jug, and topped them off with more water
And let them sit overnight.

This morning I walked out to smell them, and it still wreeks like Margarita. So! Anyone have any ideas on how to go about ridding the jugs of this smell? And also, do you all think they'd be safe to use in general since they had Margarita Mix in them in the first place?

Hot water and mild detergent can help sometimes....

Plastic can be a sponge for certain smells/chemicals..
Think pasta sauce staining your nice tupperware,etc...

yes

let it soak even..
Personally I probably wouldn't be concerned about a margarita mix smell.. But it would drive me to drink... more...

Someone needs to start a thread of your comments. I have yet to read one that doesn't make me smirk... we could call the thread mcgyvr-isms.

There is nothing toxic about margarita mix -- certainly safer than dishwashing soap or bleach -- so I would follow mcgyvr's advice and ignore the odor.

good find. . . i've heard a lot of people use used coke/pepsi drums from the bottling factory so margarita mix should be just fine.

Yea I cleaned them with hot water, a little fish liquid and some vingegar. They still smell like margarita mix unfortunately but I think they'll be ok
