Using life source like miracle mud?

Has anyone just used life source like miracle mud and just placed it in a tray in the sump? If i dose it in the DT I end up sucking it out later when siphoning my sand. It's basically just mud. Might be easier to treat it like miracle mud and replace it as needed.

Yes you can use this just placed in a tray in the sump.
