Using live rock as a divider in a sump

I have a thirty gallon tank I'm going to setup as a sump. I would like to use live rock to create three sections, inlet to skimmer/rock/refugium/rock/return. Thoughts? Can it be done? Possible problems I might run into...

I don't see why it couldn't be done but the idea of baffles is to slow the water down and create bubble traps. I don't think the rock would do that unless they were cut to size for the water to flow over in correct fashion and you could seal any holes

I agree, you probably would end up with one big sump full or rock, you take the risk that creature /algae if any in your refugium would likely crawl from one compartment to the next . Not a huge deal if you don t mind them getting mixed up and you have the proper filters on your return pumps.
