Using Natural Carbon for filtration

Hey guys,

My grandfather used natural carbon to remove odors from the fridge. Can this natural carbon be used for aquarium filtration?

For example:

Your link is charcoal for cooking and would not work as filter media. In fact it would likely do the opposite, releasing tanins and other incomplete combustion products.

Filtration carbon is called 'activated' and has been subjected to extreme temperatures to make it porous and pure. Whatever your grandfather is using however is likely activated but we can't be sure without knowing the actual product.
