Using rubberbands with nori?

I was recently told that using rubberbands to afix nori to a rock is very dangerous to my fish and i need to do some more research before advising others to do it also. So, I just wanna validate the dangers of this method.

Done it for years with no problems. I rubberband the nori to either a piece of live rock or my magnet. Of course you'll probably hear it from the people that the rubberband can break, the fish will eat it, die, etc, etc...I think people get a little to caught up with things....

well i will say i lost a purple tang from him eating a rubber band, he never crapped after that and died from what i assume was crap build up

I do it too. I use a wider, strong rubber band, and I don't over-stretch it so that it doesn't splinter. Also, it depends on what kind of fish/inverts you're feeding. I feed a conch and a blenny, and they have scrapers and/or smaller, weak mouths.

rubber bands do get weak in salt water.

but if it's for awhile no problem. the duration of tying a nori down is perfectly fine. just make sure it doesn't break off and get sucked into a power head or return pump...

my return pump choked on a rubber band once and well, stopped working.

why not just use a nori clip? my fish will eat a half a sheet off of a clip in about 30 seconds..

That is how I've gotten a lot of my tangs to start eating.

FWIW, I actually started using one of my wifes dark elastic hairbands instead of rubber bands. It blends in better, I'm not sure it makes a big difference but I tried it once and the fish seemed good with it, so I just never stopped.

My wife never wanted the hairband back either :)

I have always used rubber bands with no problems, but I usually toss them after a month of use or so.
