In order for you to kill it all with the help of an sterilizer, you will have to make sure that gph passing through the unit is just right. But to answer the question to an extent, UV does not discriminate between harmful and beneficial becteria.
Would supplementing with Phytoplex or something similar help?
I am running the UV to help clear Ich out of my tank so I need it at a low GPH. Dont plan to run it this low permanetly, hopefully long enough to help kill off the next cycle of Ich. I know this isnt a proven method but so far no signs of Ich.
May not be a proven method, but with an sterilizer I ran a 100 gallon tank with a couple of Ich magnets parasite free for 8 months all while performing very poor husbandry.
