I have about 8 of these guys growing, when I got them they were nice a dark and now its been about 4 months since I had them and the centers are getting to become yellowish/white and the skirts are a bright florescent orange.
I have the polyps on the sand bed of a 40 breeder, lighting 6x39 tek bulbs almost a month old the lighting is about 6" from the water. I do feed them.
Should they be place up higher to regain their original color?

If they had less light they would be darker.
You could use only 4 bulbs if you really want to.
I would leave it alone.
Sounds like they are doing fine and the colors are nice to me, by what you've described.
Forget the cartoon name and enjoy the living creature.

Grandis.

IME I have noticed that the UC's will become more vibrant when they grow. From the way it sounds I would not panick and as Grandis mentioned just let them be. For accuracy, it would be best to post a picture.

if they are growing fine then just let them be and enjoy. changing the bulb configuration will also help change the color/apearance of the zoas. sometimes all it takes is too swap around the placement of certain bulbs in your fixture or even change what you feed them.
