Utter Chaos Zoa Placement & Care?

Hey Guys,

Relatively new to zoas/palys (but not new to corals at all)... and I'm starting to stock my frag/grow-out tank with some zoa frags. One in particular I got just yesterday (the "utter-chaos") and was wondering under 250watt MH 14,000K lighting, where would be a good spot for it (lower in the tank with a little flow I'm guessing).

Thanks in advance for your help!

I have a colony of eleven in a 4x54watt t5 setup about midway. I have them in moderate flow and they seem to like it. Everyones tank is different so I suggest placing them low then moving them up gradually. They will let you know when they are happy.

Thanks kichimark... they seem to be doing fine right now lower in my tank (I've got MH)... my main concern was that it would be too much light. But everything seems good for now.

Thanks for the response.

You know your name looks familiar and then I see you are from around south cali. Awesome bro. I am from mthe San fernando valley area. When I first bought my UC the guy that was selling them was one of the original namers (it was him and some other guy from a store) and he had them in a cube with 150watt HQI about 6 inches from the light. My UC are about a foot give or take an inch from my 216 watt t5 fixture and are doing great. I have noticed I get better growth with a moderate current in my setup.

Following along to see where this goes...new to zoanthids myself...so far only seem to get them to grow in lower portions of my tank like most mushrooms...

Yeah, I thought your username looked familiar. I'm down in Orange County... so a little ways down south from you. I just got mine at RAP... did you end up going?

So far, I'm keeping my UC almost at the bottom of my 16-inch tall cube/frag tank under a 250-watt MH bulb... seems to like it along with some moderate flow.

A pic of Utter Chaos about a month or two (need to date my pics) after I got them. As you can see the babies are not at full potential. The second pic is just now but it is glued to the rock and I don't have a fancy camera so can not zoom. It is bigger than a quarter. Get compliments all the time.

I wanted to but I was doing double shifts at work. I did go to the cfm and they wanted 200 bucks a polyp...nuts. I heard they were cheaper at the RAP. Also heard of the girls there too haha.

i think the BEST placement, would be in my frag rack :D. Nice pick-up keep us updated i'm curious how they do because i want some.

$200?!?!?!

I got mine for a steal at $40 (for the one polyp) from a guy locally (he had a few at RAP). But I heard some vendors were still asking over $100 per polyp...

The girls weren't bad either :D

Awesome. When I got mine it was a 4 polyp frag for a hundred. I plan on selln for 40 to 50 a polyp too when the time comes (please no one pm me about this yet haha) but cheaper for people that have hooked me up before. Personally I think over 50 is way too much for any polyp. I like selling things cheaper. Get to make new friends and throw a wrench in the system. My tubbs blue sale I put up already sold out of frags within an hour haha. You will love the UC. IMO it is the most striking paly. Looks amazing when you have a bunch.

You know what....you should take progress pictures. I want to compare how mine grows compared to someone elses haha. We can compare notes on this. what you say?
