uv on double ended bulbs

i know double ended bulbs do not have the second glass shield on them, for lack of a better way of putting it, and the fixtures have a glass shield to make up for it. my question is there any reason why you couldn't use the fixture without the shield besides the splashing issue, ie: harmfull to your corals, fish, inverts ? thanks in advance
